Vanesa Rodríguez Osuna, PhD is a Project Director at sequa gGmbH, where she manages several projects in the area of international development cooperation in close collaboration with the German private sector. She also is a Senior Research Associate at the Environmental Sciences Initiative of the GC-ASRC, where she led a two-year R&D project -sponsored by UBS Asset Management-, designed to measure the social and ecological impacts of global equities on global water resources. Our developed approach was successfully tested on a US$2.1 billion asset portfolio from a large Dutch pension fund in close cooperation with an asset manager, a large Dutch pension fund and publicly traded companies. Her work at the ASRC included overseeing project outcomes and outreach efforts with the research sponsor (UBS Sustainable Equities/Asset Management) and collaborating partners (Harvard University).
Trained as an environmental engineer, Dr. Rodríguez Osuna received a M.Sc. in Natural Resource Management and Technologies in the Tropics from the Cologne University of Applied Sciences and a PhD in Geography from the University of Leipzig, with specializations in Project Management, Foreign Trade Management and Quality & Environmental Management Systems. She is a lead author of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES)’s regional assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem services for the Americas (Chapter 1: Setting the Scene and Chapter 6: Options for governance, institutional arrangements and private and public decision-making across scales and sectors). She is an invited expert for the IPBES task force to elaborate Summary for Policymakers for the Americas regional assessment.
Her past work relates to the sustainable use of biodiversity, integrated land and water management, climate change, environmental and economic assessment of ecosystem services, environmental policy, environmental impact assessment, alternative market development, and bridging the science-policy interface related to biodiversity and ecosystem services. Within these fields, she has worked for the Center for Development Research (ZEF) of the University of Bonn, the Cologne University of Applied Sciences, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Conservation Strategy Fund, RARE, Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Secretariat/UNEP, and SEQUA gGmbH.
